Hello and greetings to all. Over 40 members attended our June dinner where our guest speaker was chaptermember COL (ret) Howard Lim who shared with us his experiences in North Korea leading a team sent there torecover the remains of US soldiers who had died in combat during the Korean War. What a fascinating glimpseinside North Korea as he shared photos, stories and observations from his interfaces with his North Koreancounterparts. Howard also set up a map display to show where in North Korea the recovery mission took placeand displayed numerous propaganda materials and pamphlets he received from the North Koreans to help “reeducate”him. Thanks, Howard, for a fantastic presentation as the topic could not be more timely.
As I have written the last several months, “we continue to recognize the challenges members face as we adjustto an electronic Bugle and having a Facebook and Web presence.” We know not everyone has adjusted andremain concerned that not all with email addresses are looking for the electronic Bugle that is perhaps archivedin a spam folder. To further remind our members to respond to Marilynn Wilcox with their meal reservations,we started last month to send out email reminders of the monthly meeting, the speaker and the meal choices. Wethink this helped with our attendance and we are open to your suggestions for other ways we can ensure all ofour members get the word regarding our monthly meetings.
As for legislative activities, things remain the same on the national front. On the state side, the legislaturepassed a budget in the final hours of the fiscal year, just barely beating the deadline. Unfortunately, it did notfinish its business as the legislature did not pass a full capital budget that funds the construction projects andassociated staff. This has a potential of affecting the Washington State Department of Veteran’s Affairs as theagency has some health and safety projects that need staff funding in order to complete. Hopefully the legislaturewill come back after the July 4th holiday and finish the budget. Our next board meeting will be at 5:30pm, Tuesday, July 11 in the Quinault Auditorium and our upcoming July19 meeting will be a dinner meeting held in the Seventeen 51 restaurant and bistro at Panorama with a social at5:30 PM and the meeting being called to order at 6:00 PM. Our guest speaker is Colonel Pace, the commanderof Madigan Army Medical Center. I hope to see you there and remember each of us is a recruiter: bring a newface to the meeting.
